Smoke photography is not easy. You need patience, specific gear and a lot of practice in order to achieve some nice results. The settings to be used are simple enough but that is only 1/5 of the job. It is mostly a question of trial and error. What you will need are:

• A flash with custom settings
• A tripod on which you will mount the flash
• A camera that manual settings can be chosen
• A flashlight of some other means to “light” the smoke in order to focus on it
• Some way of focusing the flash on the smoke, some hard paper will do
• A candle or some other way of producing the smoke
• A black or dark backround behind the smoke

Try focusing on the smoke by pointing the flashlight on it and shoot away, do not stop to check the screen just shoot. You will check the results later. Realistically from 100 shots you will be keeping only a handful unless you are really lucky of course! Try it out and send us your best results in order to show them here at fstop99.com!
